Storm Watch & Spirit Watch: Covering Mayarí, Holguín, and Beyond in Prayer
Please lift in prayer all those in the path of Major Category 5 Hurricane Melissa, especially the people of Jamaica, Eastern Cuba, and Bermuda. The storm is expected to pass directly through Mayarí and the wider Holguín District—home to our sister churches and communities. May all affected find safety, strength, and shelter during this powerful storm.

As we witness the approach of Hurricane Melissa — now a major Category 5 storm — toward the Caribbean and Atlantic islands, we hold in our hearts the people of Jamaica, eastern Cuba (especially the Holguín District and the region around Mayarí, where our sister churches and communities are located), and Bermuda.
Why the concern is so great
- The storm has rapidly intensified and is now exhibiting sustained winds of 175 mph (282 km/h), making it one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record.
- It is forecast to make landfall in Jamaica late Monday or early Tuesday, cross eastern Cuba afterward, and then approach the vicinity of Bermuda.
- Because of its slow forward motion, warm sea surface temperatures, and size, the storm threatens extended periods of life-threatening rainfall, storm surge, winds and flooding.
Our prayer & focus for the prioritized areas
Jamaica
This island is facing the prospect of what may be its strongest storm ever, with severe risks of flash floods, landslides, and destructive winds.
Prayer: May all those in Jamaica find safe refuge, may vulnerable communities be protected, and may emergency services be sufficient for the challenge.
Eastern Cuba – Holguín District, Mayarí
The path of the storm is expected to pass directly through this region; our sister-churches and local community members in Mayarí and the wider Holguín district are especially in our prayers. Conditions such as heavy rainfall, landslides on mountainous terrain, and wind damage are especially concerning.
Prayer: May God grant strength to local leaders and churches, shelter to the families, and that damage may be minimized. May the storm’s wrath spare those we know and love.
Bermuda
Although farther down the forecast path, Bermuda is also on alert. The outer bands of the hurricane and its residual energy could still bring significant wind, rain, and surge.
Prayer: For the people of Bermuda as they remain vigilant and prepared, that they may safely weather the storm and emerge with minimal impact.
Our collective prayer
Heavenly Father, we lift all who lie in the path of Hurricane Melissa — especially those in Jamaica, eastern Cuba (Holguín District / Mayarí), and Bermuda. Grant them safety, strength, and shelter in this powerful storm. Protect homes, churches, and lives. Comfort families who worry; empower responders and volunteers who stand ready. Amid wild winds and heavy rains, be their refuge and hope. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
